Today Is a Good Day to Die
Until recently, the Borderlands movie had been on the list of perpetually-on-hold video game movies. A little while ago, Randy Pitchford prematurely tweeted out an announcement that Hostel director Eli Roth would be directing the movie, and then it was officially announced last week at PAX East. At the convention, Roth appeared during Gearbox’s panel. Along with confirmation that Gearbox would be partnering with Lionsgate, as well as Avi and Ari Arad, Roth also expressed his excitement and voiced the possibility of “killing” Borderlands cosplayers for the movie.
Normally, movies have things called costume departments and stunt teams, but whatever. It is usually the hardcore fans that have the best input, especially when it comes to authenticity. Borderlands has a specific style, and there are a ton of cosplayers that capture that style in real life; their artistic talents could prove useful in creating the look that fans will want to see. On the other hand, cosplayers are not necessarily actors. A day on a movie set is not really like a day at a convention. Being on set often means hours of waiting around until you are needed.
Obviously, with the movie still in pre-pre-pre-production, a lot is still up in the air. No word has been given on how cosplayers would be selected or contacted, or even if that will be the plan once production moves forward. At this point, it is just a fun way to get fans excited. If you are a cosplayer, you may want to keep your Borderlands portfolio fresh for the (x number of) years [where x is the number of years until production starts].
