Fresh Take on a Classic
As far as imagery goes, the Mortal Kombat series is known for its iconic logo; a circle surrounding the head of a dragon that has nothing to do with the game at all. Still, iconic nonetheless. Though it has been featured on every Mortal Kombat title, there has been very little variation on it. The most radical difference was on the cover of Mortal Kombat II in which the dragon faced left instead of right. The Mortal Kombat logo for the 2021 movie has been revealed recently by actor Ludi Lin on his Twitter account.
Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang in the upcoming movie, tweeted out an image of one of the movie’s clapperboard (“And Action!” thing) with its release date written in on it. It also features the movie’s logo, which of course takes inspiration from the classic logo with a couple of differences. The main difference is that instead of the dragon head being inside the circle, the dragon’s tail curves around the edge and trails back to create the circle. It also has spines on the inner circle like many imaginings of dragons do. It also sits in between the words “Mortal Kombat”.

None of the games present the logog with these features, so it is a nice fresh logo while keeping the traditional look. Mortal Kombat was first set to release in theaters on March 5th, 2021, but was bumped ahead to September 15th, 2021.
