New Patent Showcases Sony’s Latest PlayStation Controller With Extra Buttons

New Patent Shows off Extra Buttons for the Latest PlayStation Controller

Last month a leaked patent for a PS5 controller was swirling around the internet and now, as we draw near to the end of the year we’ve managed to get our hands on yet another PlayStation controller patent. Yesterday Sony filed a patent for a brand new controller that looks a little different than any we’ve seen from the company before.

Sony

According to a new patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization Sony is working on a new design for their DualShock controller. The design appears to be similar to previous ones however it does not have the PlayStation button visible on the patent image and it showcases two extra buttons on the back. These two buttons look like triggers on both the left and right side available for input mapping. You can check out the patent design below.

While the patent isn’t exactly the final product, it does include two new trigger buttons on the back which appear to be programmable to perform specific functions. They appear to be located directly behind the two analog sticks, however the patent mentions that they might move to different places as well. While it’s unclear whether Sony just wanted to cover their bases for different design options or whether the controller will be a bit more customizable, it’ll be interesting to see which one it is in the future.

Of course the timing of this new patent is awfully peculiar, given the release of the PS5 next year, however it’s not clear which generation this new patent is designed for. After all, it could just be an updated version of the DualShock 4. Fingers crossed we’ll find out soon. What do you think about this new patent?
