Why Hasn’t There Been a GTA Movie? Take Two CEO Explains

Will We Ever See GTA On the Big Screen?

Grand Theft Auto is one of, if not the biggest franchise in gaming. Rivaled only by Mario in fame, almost everyone alive has played a GTA game or heard of the series. The GTA brand has managed to pull in billions of dollars over the years and has revolutionized video games. It is safe to say that Rockstar is on top of the world. However, despite their immense success, there has never been a GTA movie. But why? It has all the characteristics of a great blockbuster film. It turns out there as been talks of making a GTA movie before, but it just never materialized.

GTA Online Introduces Gunrunning

According to the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, a GTA movie has never been made becasue of how hands-on Rockstar and Take-Two would need to be. “We’d want to have complete creative control to make sure we expressed it the way we wanted,” Zelnick said in an interview.

The obsession with having a large role in making a Grand Theft Auto movie is not totally unfounded either. The track records of video game movies and TV shows are less than stellar. The negative stereotype that comes with video game films is in large part to movie companies straying too far from the source material. The finished product tends to look like fan fiction at best.

The good news is that a Grand Theft Auto movie is not out of the question in the future. It would just have to be largely funded by the developers themselves. And it isn’t like they are short of money. Rockstar is one of the richest studios out there. A movie is not that much of a stretch.

However, fans would much rather have GTA VI.
