Uncharted 5 Isn’t Coming Any Time Soon But a Former Naughty Dog Director Gives His Thoughts on the Future of the Franchise
Uncharted 5 coming out is a question of when not if. Naughty Dog’s premier franchise has sold millions of copies since it launched back in 2007 and the latest mainline entry, Uncharted 4, reportedly managed to sell over 15 million copies since releasing in 2016.
However, for the time being, the series is on a bit of a break with Naughty Dog being busy with The Last of Us Part II and Uncharted 4 seemingly concluding Nathan Drake’s story. But, a former Naughty Dog director seems to think that Nate shouldn’t hang up his gun holster just yet.
“I would love to play another Nathan Drake game, or even another game in that world with other characters,” Bruce Straley told GamesRadar. Straley worked at Naughty Dog for 18 years and developed the Uncharted series and The Last of Us before leaving the studio in 2017.
“I think that has a ton of potential still,” Straley continued. “But I want to see it done in a way that is mindful of the original concepts that we pushed for in UC2; keeping everything core, everything on the stick, all the set pieces playable, and so on. I’d also keep pushing UC into the realm of player choice, and keep seeing how that affects the adventure.”
“How do you make the player feel like they’re the ones discovering things on the adventure with Nathan Drake, rather than something that feels like the story relegates the player to play a certain way?” Straley also said. “I think that the opportunity to expand on those mechanics and really play an adventure sounds amazing to me.”
Straley added that he wouldn’t want Uncharted to become an open world game but pointed to Uncharted 4’s open-ended Madagascar level as “a good talking point to start a conversation.”
