Court Case Hits UK ISPs Hard
A recent court ruling means that UK ISPs now have to block access to websites that host pirated Nintendo Switch games. The ruling is a major strike against game piracy the world over. Five separate major ISPs are now obligated to block access to the sites in question.
Sky, BT, EE, Talktalk and Virgin Media are all now obligated to “block, or at least impede access” to four big game piracy sites. The injunction covers distribution of stolen games, as well as mods and advice on hacking Switch firmware. Nintendo is working to close up that infamous firmware exploit, as well as go after any potential software hacks in the works.
Nintendo released a statement, saying that “this decision will help protect the UK games industry and the more than 1800 developers worldwide that create games for the Nintendo Switch platform, and who rely on legitimate sales of games for their livelihood and to keep bringing quality content to gamers.” Time will tell whether or not this legal precedent will have an impact on game piracy in other parts of the world.
