According to Naughty Dog Joel Plays an Important Role in The Last of Us Part II
Naughty Dog recently dropped not only a brand new trailer for The Last of Us Part II but a bunch of new details about what fans can expect from the upcoming game. In addition to unveiling that the game is set to be 50% bigger than the first, it’s not going to be an open world experience and that everyone is expendable, now the developers have explained Joel’s role within the sequel.
Up until the latest trailer Joel hasn’t made an appearance and it seemed completely possible that he might be absent from the game. So what kind of role is he set to play? It’s clear that the game is set to focus on Ellie, especially since that who we’re going to be playing as, and Joel is going to be pushed into a supporting role. And how exactly does that effect his impact of the story and overall game? Naughty Dog’s creative director Neil Druckmann says that he’s still going to play a very important role within The Last of Us Part II.
According to Druckmann the reason he hasn’t made much of an appearance up to this point is to showcase how strained his relationship has become with Ellie. Here’s what he had to say about Joel and Ellie, “Their relationship is strained. Some of it is because teenagers will be teenagers, and some of it is because of their history, which is why you haven’t seen them together a lot. So much of The Last of Us is about this duo and their dynamic and how they are together, how they play together. I will say Joel plays a major part of this game.”
