New Mortal Kombat Movie Will Have an R Rating and Fatalities

The Movie? Finish It

The Mortal Kombat franchise is one of the flagship names when it comes to violence and gore in video games. While the first two movies released in 1995 and 1997 gained some praise from fans, for what they were, they shy away from what the games are really known for. They were both rated PG-13 upon release, which means they were sans blood and gore. Earlier today, the writer for the new Mortal Kombat movie announced that the upcoming film will be rated R, and we expect the filmmakers will use every inch of that rating.

In a tweet, Mortal Kombat’s writer Greg Russo announced the movie’s rating and that we will finally see Fatalities in all their g(l)ory. He specifically said he won’t tell us which Fatalities we will see, but we might be able to put together some answers. We already know that Joe Taslim has been cast as Sub-Zero. That means we can probably expect to see someone frozen and shattered into bloody pieces á la that one scene in Logan. Other characters have been rumored because of a supposed leak back in March. These characters include Kano, Mileena, Jax, Sonya Blade, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Jax, and Shang Tsung.

The Mortal Kombat reboot is expected to be out in theaters in 2021, produced by James Wan and directed by Simon McQuoid. Pre-production has started and filming will begin in the next few months.
