Apparently Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Is Similar in Design to Sekiro
Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is arguably one of the most highly anticipated games of the year and FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is one of the best games already released this year. So what do these two games have in common? According to Lead Combat Designer Jason de Heras, they’re very similar in game design.
In a new interview with EDGE Magazine (September 2019, Issue 335) Jason de Heras from Respawn talked about their upcoming single-player action adventure Star Wars game. And if you were looking to get even more hyped about it’s release later this year, he says that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is actually quite similar to Sekiro. Here’s what he had to say about it, “I thought it was pretty badass, and a little comforting to know that you could make this type of game without a stamina bar. They let you attack, they let you roll, they do all this for free – and then the AI will tell you if you’re doing the correct thing. It just confirmed to us that you don’t have to limit everything the player does; let them have a little more agency, and then let the AI give them a slap on the wrist or a punch in the face. It was a positive thing for us to know there was a game that was similar to ours. Very similar.”
Stig Asmussen, the Game Director from Respawn, also talked about his larger appreciation for FromSoftware games. As a result, you can see where the inspiration came from for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Asmussen stated, “I’ve been a huge FromSoftware fan since King’s Field. I mean, King’s Field II is one of my favourite games ever. But it’s not about you liking a game, and trying to make that game yourself. It’s more, ‘What can we learn about what’s fun about it?'”
Although it’s likely the upcoming game from Respawn won’t be as difficult as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, it’s definitely interesting to hear where they drew some inspiration from. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order drops on November 15th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. What do you think about this recent revelation?
