Bloodstained Ritual of the Night’s Devs Had to Beat the Bosses Without Taking Damage

It Was Important for Bloodstained Ritual of the Night’s Bosses To Be Absolutely Fair, Says Koji Igarashi

Veteran Castlevania developer and Bloodstained Ritual of the Night creator Koji Igarashi revealed in a recent interview that the game’s boss designers had to follow this rule: They had to beat the boss they created with a dagger while taking no damage.

“We make sure that it’s possible to beat a boss without taking a hit regardless of the difficulty and by doing so, we reduce the number of unfair enemy attacks,” Igarashi told Gamasutra. “Removing the ‘unfairness’ allows players to think about what they could have done to avoid a Game Over. It makes them want to challenge the boss again using a different method. It’s a golden rule we follow in our games. (Honestly, don’t ask us to complete this challenge more than once though…)”

Igarashi also spoke about the next game he’s planning to make. He didn’t say that this future project was going to be a Bloodstained sequel but given how well-received Bloodstained Ritual of the Night was, it’s likely that it will be.

“Creating promises at such an early stage of development was much more difficult than I anticipated,” Igarashi said. “There were many advantages in this case, but if I already have sufficient funding for the next project, I would continue to use that until the end.”

“However, there will be various situations where we’ll need to ask for feedback from the community,” he continued. “Depending on how we use it, Kickstarter is a very powerful tool and there may be possibilities in the future after careful planning.”
