Earth’s Mightiest… In Different Ways
One of the big draws to the Avengers is the diversity in power and ability sets. Iron Man shoots lasers, Hawkeye shoots arrows, Thor shoots lightning, Hulk shoots… fists? The point is everyone is different. That is the essence of what Marvel’s Avengers is trying to capture. With a mix of gods, soldiers, spies, power-armours, and hulks, you can bet that all of Marvel’s Avengers characters will play quite differently. After the display at E3, we now have a taste of what each hero can do on their own.
Before the reveal at E3, information had surfaced that there would be gameplay elements unique to specific characters. Keywords like “stealth sections” were thrown around. Obviously, we cannot really imagine Iron Man or Hulk in something like that, so we can assume that the section in question is played with Black Widow. GamesRadar+ spoke to Vince Napoli last week. Napoli is the lead combat designer for Marvel’s Avengers. “You know, if we need to feel like an assassin, we’re going to use stealth. Let’s give her those [qualities], and then start building the combat system to accommodate all these things.”
“The game plays very, very differently when you play with each of the characters… The personal mechanics are totally different. The way they play defence is very different.” In the example of Black Widow, “Widow doesn’t block. She’s not going to block attacks, she’s going to evade them. She’s going to use her grappling hook.” While Black Widow might get squished by a car or something, a character like Hulk can just knock it out of the way, Iron Man might blast it. Marvel’s Avengers comes out on May 15th, 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
