As crazy as the people in the Borderlands universe are, they always manage to throw in relatable or identifiable characters. Though the game and our reality seem so distant, it is always nice to see pop culture references and inspirations coming through. The Borderlands 3 villains appear to emulate the strategies of internet influencers to gain their followers. In an interview with Screen Rant, the game’s co-writer Danny Homan discussed their creation and their way of riling up their base.

Borderlands 3 Villains

The Calypso Twins are smart, they’re savvy, right? They saw this opportunity to maybe galvanize the bandits into a cult and create an army of their own, and the Livescreams, and Let’s Flays, and these kinds of things; they’re a way of amping up their followers and kind of creating this cult machine that kind of attracts more and more followers,” said Homan. Let’s Flays and Livescreams are obvious nods to gamer culture on the internet. Wildly popular streamers and YouTubers have die-hard fans like the Calypso Twins have, except with a few less psychos. “Part of the fun of the Calypso Twins is that they are entertainers, right? They’re entertaining you and they’re entertaining the bandits. That’s why the cult exists…they’re doing terrible things in the name of their cult.

Bandits in on Pandora and Elpis have always been a wildcard of sorts. They never really work for the big bad of any of the games. The Calypos Twins appear to be the first villains in the series to really rally the bandits against the Vault Hunters. Borderlands 3 launches on September 13th on Xbox One, PS4, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
