The Final Fortnite Rune Appears to Be an Active and Hungry Volcano

Something I appreciate about Fortnite is the storytelling it does with play area. As the seasons pass, mysterious things are spotted such as Season 3’s comets. They impact the very geography of the map, pun intended. Some things, like the comets, are inevitable and will progress as the season plays out. Other events, such as the Season 8 runes require player involvement. The last Fortnite rune of Season 8 appears to be connected to the volcano that has sprung up this season. So far, no one really knows what will happen when all five runes are activated, but there are theories floating around.

Fortnite Rune

The first of the five runes was a simple challenge: hit it with a pickaxe until the meter was filled. The second rune required players to hit lasers with their pickaxe. The third was all about dancing in front of it, and the fourth involved matching tiles. The fifth sees players throwing items, weapons, and ammo into the mouth of the volcano. As the fifth rune has been fed, players are noticing something curious. There are a series of screens near Loot Lake that are activating one by one. So far, only three are active, but they seem depict items that have been vaulted.

The vaulted items on the screen are Season 4’s Bouncer and Drum Gun, and Season 7’s X-4 Stormwing. There are three more screens available. Some people think that once all five runes are activated, one of the vaulted items will return after a round of voting. There is also speculation that something will happen to Loot Lake.

What do you think will happen after the runes are activated? Let us know in the comments below. You can also check out the history of the map changes in Fortnite.
