Sonic Movie Director Responds to Design Criticism, Changes are “Going to Happen”

Sonic Will Get a Redesign After Fan Outcry

Sonic the Hedgehog movie director, Jeff Fowler, responded to the overwhelmingly negative fan criticism of Sonic’s design in the film after the first official trailer dropped on Tuesday.

Interestingly enough, Fowler vows that changes to Sonic’s design are “going to happen” and that everyone involved is “committed to making this character the BEST he can be…”

“Thank you for the support. And the criticism,” Fowler said in his tweet. “The message is loud and clear…you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast”

There aren’t any details on what those promised changes will be, but you don’t have to look far to see that fan fixes have been circulating the web for months now. The main criticisms are targeted at Sonic’s teeth which look, well, weirdly human.

Sonic’s design has been heavily criticized well before the trailer was ever released. Fans weren’t happy back in December when the design silhouette was revealed, then again when a leaked photo of the blue blur appeared online. But now that we’ve all seen it in motion, all it did was confirm everyone’s worst nightmares.

Making such changes to the character so late in the game is practically unheard of but we’re at least happy to see the studios take such an interest. It does, at least, show that they care about the character as much as fans do even if their original design was completely off.

The movie is still due out on November 8th. Make sure you check out our 5 Reasons to Get Excited for Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.
