2019 Marks Need for Speed’s 25th Anniversary
Fans should be happy to know that a new Need for Speed game is coming in 2019, but not to expect any details coming out of E3 next month.
EA has stated that a new Need for Speed is being worked on and that it is due out “later in 2019.” Over on the company’s website, EA’s Ben Walke had this to say:
“Are you going to hear more about the next NFS title? Yes. Is it being released this year? Yes. Will we be doing anything in June? No. It’s as simple as that, but we wanted to give you a heads up before you started asking “where are you?” Our goal is to deliver a truly memorable high-speed entry into the 25 years of NFS, rather than a series of promotional events. The game matters most – a sentiment we bet you share with us.”
As Walke says above, 2019 marks the series’ 25th anniversary. It sounds like the NFS team has something special planned for the occasion, but no details were shared.
The last game, Need for Speed Payback, was released in November 2017. In our original review, we scored it a 71 saying it’s “a stark improvement over 2015’s entry in the series, adding likable characters, an enjoyable if not formulaic story, user-friendly tuning, and the best bits and pieces from the previous games rolled into one.” Some drawbacks were “its misuse of compelling characters, lack of police force, and an open world which – while beautiful – only has about 1/8th of it in the city, leaving most of your driving to be an extended scenic route.”
