BioWare’s Game Development Process Has Come Under Much Recent Scrutiny
The general manager of BioWare recently told his employees in an internal email that management is planning to solve the many workplace problems that were reported on in a lengthy Tuesday Kotaku article. The article painted a picture of a dysfunctional BioWare that was struggling throughout the development of the studio’s latest release, Anthem.
“I wanted to get a note out to you to share my thoughts on the Kotaku article and the online discussion it has raised,” general manager Casey Hudson’s email reportedly read. “The article mentions many of the problems in the development of Anthem and some of our previous projects. And it draws a link between those issues and the quality of our workplace and the well-being of our staff. These problems are real and it’s our top priority to continue working to solve them.”
However, Hudson criticized Kotaku’s naming of several current & former BioWare developers throughout the article and characterized this as “out-of-bounds” reporting.
“It’s unfair and extremely traumatizing to single out people in this way, and we can’t accept that treatment towards any of our staff,” Hudson wrote. “That’s why we did not participate in the article and made a statement to that effect.”
BioWare’s response to Kotaku’s article was reportedly published before the developer had a chance to read the article in full and the response itself was widely criticized.
