No Man’s Sky Is Getting a Drastic Online Expansion This Year… for Free

Space Goes Online in 2019

Fans of outer space, rejoice! The next expansion to the final frontier will come to No Man’s Sky this year. In a news post, Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray announced his next vision for the procedurally-generated Sci-Fi experience.

No Man's Sky Abyss Update

Originally intended as three separate updates, the next No Man’s Sky piece of content will arrive in one big expansion. This content drop will boast a variety of features to help breathe new life into the game’s online infrastructure. From how it sounds, Murray’s goal is to make the universe a single space, with players traveling and exploring the cosmos together, no holds barred. Everything to be featured in the next update is largely a mystery, except for the name.

The title of the next great endeavor will be No Man’s Sky Beyond, and it will be available at no extra cost to players. Plus, there will be no microtransactions. It all starts with a component called “No Man’s Sky Online,” which Murray disassociates from the typical MMO experience.

“No Man’s Sky Online includes a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together,” Murray wrote in a news post. “Whilst this brings people together like never before, and has many recognizable online elements, we don’t consider No Man’s Sky to be an MMO – it won’t require a subscription, won’t contain microtransactions, and will be free for all existing players.

“These changes are an answer to how we have seen people playing since the release of [No Man’s Sky] NEXT, and is something we’ve dreamed of for a long time.

“We will talk more about each component when we know we can be precise, and look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks.

“Beyond will be our most ambitious chapter so far, and something we’ve been working ridiculously hard on. We’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.

“It’s unexpected but so rewarding to see so many accolades and nominations for No Man’s Sky as Best On-going or Most Evolved this year. To some NEXT may have felt like a natural end-point for our journey, but for us it was another step on a longer voyage.”
