Will Cyberpunk 2077 be Exclusive to a Specific Store? They say No

Learning from the Mistakes of Others

Cyberpunk 2077 is still a ways away and at this point does not even have a release date. That does not stop people from wondering about it though, and they may have good reason to wonder. Remember when a gamer’s question about a game’s release was when and not how? Ever since Metro Exodus publisher Deep Silver announced that their upcoming game will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store, means of distribution has been a hot topic question for gamers. With the enormous hype behind Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red should tread carefully to keep the fans’ favour.

A couple of days ago, a fan pleaded with the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account not to be exclusive to the Epic Games Store. Cyberpunk 2077 replied with a “Yeaaaaaaaaah…. Pass on that.” Steam users can breathe easy. Instead of a simple “no”, this is likely a commentary on the controversy surrounding Metro Exodus’s release. Releasing exclusively through the Epic Games Store does have its benefits. Revenue is shared with developers a little more generously than through Steam, but that will not matter very much if fans boycott the product. Fans ultimately decide if a game earns a lot of money or not.

As far as customer feedback goes, the Epic Games Store does not even have a review system in place right now. The review system they are developing though is making people very unhappy. Basically, developer will have to opt in to reviews, so some games might not have any reviews on the site. Beyond independent reviews on sites, fans will not be able to be heard, as they claim. But it sounds like Cyberpunk 2077 just wants to avoid all that. As mentioned above, Cyberpunk 2077 does not yet have a release date, but aims to launch on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
