Super Mario Movie Gets Targeted Release Window

“If You Just Want to End This Right Now, I Would Understand.” – Princess Daisy

During a recent financial briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed the targeted release window for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie.

Furukawa stated that the film is “moving along for an anticipated theatrical release around 2022,” which, coming at the beginning of 2019, makes me think maybe they announced this project a little prematurely? He also reaffirmed that Nintendo’s focus will remain in gaming specifically, while exploring other avenues to bring their IPs to the attention of more people. I don’t know who they think is going to find out about Mario for the first time through a film in 2022, but sure Nintendo, you do you as you always do.

The above picture is from the critically maligned Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993 starring Bob Hoskins (right) as Mario, and John Leguizamo (left) as Luigi, who admitted to spending a large portion of the film’s shoot drunk to get through the experience . The film also starred Dennis Hopper as King Koopa – when his six-year-old son asked him why he played “that terrible guy King Koopa in Super Mario Bros.,” Hopper said “Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes.” His son responded with “Dad, I don’t need shoes that badly.”

If you’re looking to spend some time with everyone’s favorite plumber the way his creator intended, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story recently dropped for 3DS, followed shortly by the Super Mario Bros. U port to the Switch. Let us know who you think will regret joining the upcoming movie in the comments!
