Resident Evil 2 Remake Has Already Shipped 3 Million Copies

Capcom Announces Impressive Sales Performance for Resident Evil 2

Capcom has announced today that the Resident Evil 2 remake has shipped 3 million units worldwide in its first week.

In the same official press release, Capcom also announced that sales for the entire Resident Evil series are now at an impressive 88 million units since the original game debuted for the PS1 in 1996. It was also revealed that Resident Evil 7 (released in January 2017) has gone on to sell a cumulative 6 million units as of December 31st, 2018.

The original Resident Evil 2 on PS1 launched in 1998 where it achieved cumulative sales of 4.96 million units in its lifespan. It ended up being the fourth best-selling RE game in the franchise and was also critically-acclaimed.

As for the remake, which launched on January 25th for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, it debuted at the number one spot on the UK sales chart. It just so happens that the PS1 original also took that crown back in 1998. The remake has garnered a ton of praise across the industry for not simply being an updated port and making smart gameplay decisions that feel relevant in 2019. A new gameplay mode called The Ghost Survivors is expected to launch for free in the coming weeks. Capcom also announced that the “1-Shot Demo” was downloaded over 4.7 million times.

Here’s a snippet of what we said about the game in our launch review:

“Resident Evil 2 is a remake that went above and beyond the call of duty. Capcom gave clamouring fans exactly what they wanted. Each part of the experience whether it is the story, gameplay, visuals, or audio have all come together making Resident Evil 2 a fabulous complete package. While minor annoyances do exist, Resident Evil 2 (2019 edition) is about as flawless as one could hope for. Bottom line, Resident Evil 2 is an outstanding remake and one you can purchase with confidence.”
