Overkill’s The Walking Dead Console Release Delayed

Overkill’s The Walking Dead Console Release Might Be Dead

Starbreeze Studios has delayed the release of Overkill’s The Walking Dead on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One indefinitely. The cooperative zombie shooter was originally planned for a February console release, but poor reception to the PC version and some developmental bumps in the road led to a delay.

The press release announcing the delay states that Starbreeze Studios is “currently evaluating and reviewing the performance of the game” on consoles. Although it’s not 100 percent clear what this means, as of now it sounds like the console version wasn’t running at a publishable level. Even the PC game requires players to have a powerful machine if they want to play the game using the highest settings. Add to that the fact that 4-player co-op style games are demanding even outside of visuals and console porting is probably pretty tricky.

Here’s an excerpt from our review of the PC version:

“The stability of the game still needs loads of tweaking. I had two hard crashes before capping my frame-rate and lowering the graphics all the way down. You’ll have some frame-rate problems regardless. This can definitely hurt the game in some places. My favorite was 3-5 second freezes where I ended up 10-20 feet from my freezing position, when I was walking of course. It needs some fixing, some way, somehow. At least my HUD kept up the entire time.”
