New Switch Model May Come Later This Year
Despite Nintendo swearing they’re not interested in releasing a new model of the Switch anytime soon after a fiscally successful 2018, a new report suggests the House of Mario may be doing exactly that.
According to Nikkei (via Gematsu), Nintendo plans to launch a new model of the hybrid console with a stronger focus on portability – which makes sense seeing as the numbers say most owners play games in the console’s handheld mode – in an attempt to expand the the platform’s user base. Apparently they’ve even spoken with “multiple suppliers and developers” already, in order to get the “smaller Switch” to market later this year.
Additionally, the report states that Nintendo intends to launch a “more expensive” version of its online service launched late last year. What that would include is beyond us, but seeing as someone recently found a bunch of SNES games in Switch Online’s coding, it wouldn’t be too surprising if that was the incentive for fans to cough up more cash.
This all sounds just about in-line with Nintendo’s past handheld consoles going on to receive multiple iterations in various sizes. Of course, this is all to be taken with a grain of salt until the company confirms anything themselves. Hopefully we’ll hear more about it soon!
