Why Grand Theft Auto 6 Would Be Tricky
Part of the charm of Grand Theft Auto game, storytelling-wise, is its rude depiction of the everyday. Rockstar places modern society under a microscope and highlights everything worthy of ridicule until its hilarious. According to studio co-founder Dan Houser, that would be hard to do in today’s political climate.
Speaking to GQ, Houser commented on the typical goal of a Grand Theft Auto story. The in-game world is a parody of everything we see in Entertainment, Politics, and society; the primary difference is that the experience is blunt about the environment we live in. With how extreme the situation in America has become, embattled as it is by both the extreme left and right movements, Houser doesn’t seem sure of how to tackle Grand Theft Auto 6.
“It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did,” said Houser. “Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry.
“It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It’s hard to satirise for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast.”
Exactly. How does a game developer satirize real life that’s already satirical? Well, if anyone can do it, it’s Rockstar. Let’s just hope the team(s) doesn’t have to crunch through the process. Several reports have surfaced regarding the studio’s crunch culture, which you may have heard of. However, many of them allude to a harrowing work ethic that has since improved. Reports vary, but we expect to learn more as time goes by.
The studios highly-anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to arrive on October 26, 2018, just two days from now. Stay tuned for our review, which goes live tomorrow at 4 AM.
Happy gaming.
