Marvel’s Spider-Man Outsells Every Spider-Man Game Combined

Literally the Ultimate Spider-Man

The NPD sales charts are in for September, and it has ranked Marvel’s Spider-Man as the best-selling game of the month. Not only did the web slinger’s IP reach the top of the list, but it also outsold every PlayStation exclusive to date in terms of dollar sales.

Spider-Man PS4 City

September turned into a solid month for video game sales. Just about every game did well, but Spider-Man turned into lightning in a bottle. In its launch month, the game by Insomniac managed to outsell multiplatform releases like FIFA 19 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Moreover, it sold more units than every Spider-Man game launch month combined by 37%. This would explain why there were shortages in Japan

For 2018 sales, Marvel’s Spider-Man has been outsold by God of War and Far Cry 5, the latter of which holds the no.1 spot. The year’s end may tell a different story, however.

September boasted a very strong list of games, enough to improve hardware sales for Microsoft and Sony. Forza Horizon 4 witnessed the best launch month of any game in the series. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, too, outperformed its predecessor Origins by doubling its percentage growth. While the Xbox One saw a 30% year-on-year sales increase, the PS4 still topped sales. Judging by last year’s sales, however, interest in other consoles has declined.

The top sports game for September was NBA 2K19, which launched at no.2 but is already the fifth best-selling game of the year. The full list of top 20 games is available below.
