Disney Drops First Teaser Trailer for Live-Action Aladdin

Aladdin Releases Next Year on May 24th, 2019

Don’t you dare close your eyes because Disney has just dropped the debut teaser trailer on Thursday night for the live-action adaption of their 1992 animated classic Aladdin.

Aladdin is being directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Homes) and is the next animated Disney movie to be adapted into a live-action production. For those that need a refresher, Aladdin tells the story of a poor “street rat” who comes into possession of a magic lamp which, upon rubbing, unleashes an eccentric and loud-mouthed genie who grants him three wishes. Later on, he meets and falls in love with Princess Jasmine, manages to win her heart, all the while trying to stay ahead of the evil sorcerer, Jafar.

The titular character will be played Mena Massoud, a young Canadian actor who is something of an unknown. His most recent work includes an appearance on Amazon’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Genie will be played by Will Smith taking over for the late and great Robin Williams, Princess Jasmine by Naomi Scoot (Power Rangers) and Jafar by Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express).

Disney's Aladdin

Aladdin continues Disney’s trend to make live-action adaptations of some of their animated classics. They found enormous success with last years’ Beauty and the Beast remake and 2016’s The Jungle Book. Both films were recognized for staying true to the originals and expanding upon them with more details and added musical numbers. We’re expecting Aladdin to, more or less, follow in the same footsteps.

Aladdin will open in theatres on May 24th, 2019.
