Just two weeks after its release, Quantic Dreams’ Detroit: Become Human has sold 1 million units, making it their most successful launch to date. The third-person adventure game features multiple playable characters and no “game over” message since the story continues even when characters die. On top of its financial success, it has been critically well-received, with a current Metacritic score of 79.
“We have just passed the million mark sold for Detroit: Become Human, two weeks after the release of the game,” said Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the deputy CEO of Quantic Dream—the French independent studio behind the game. “This is clearly our best start. The previous title of this flagship of narrative video games, Heavy Rain, in 2014, took five weeks to break the milestone of one million copies. In total, it attracted 5.5 million players.”
Detroit: Become Human is a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and while it doesn’t compare to the system’s other exclusives like God of War—which hit 3.1 million sales in three days—the fact that such an ambitious and unique project did so well is impressive.
Detroit: Become Human was pre-funded by Sony, and developer Quantic Dream have partnered with the manufacturer for each new game they have made in the past 12 years. Apparently, they are already discussing the studio’s next project.
“Our revenue depends on Sony’s advances and our profitability (depends on) the success of our games,” de Fondaumière said. He claims that the company makes 10 million euros in annual revenue, with a staff of 155 employees on permanent contracts at specific stages of game development.
Check out our review of Detroit: Become Human, which says, “Detroit: Become Human is a game that, at its core, deals with some mature and heavy-hitting themes throughout. Without a doubt, you’d be hard-pressed not to get sucked into the engaging and intriguing narrative created by David Cage and his team at Quantic Dream.” You can also check out our video review below.
