Shiver Me Timbers, The Hungering Horror is Coming!Â
Sea of Thieves was met with quite a bit of criticism regarding its content – or lack thereof – when it launched earlier this year. Now, Rare has let the world know how it plans to improve upon that.
The Hungering Deep expansion will open the floodgates to a plethora of new content including a “special limited time campaign,” which will see players “piecing together the tale of Merrick the bard and his brush with hungering horror.” Along with Merrick comes an adventuring group called the Bilge Rats, and said “hungering horror” is speculated to be a Megalodon, which I’ve included a size comparison diagram below courtesy of Discovery’s Sharkopedia.
The expansion also includes a ton of new loot for players to shore up, including two new instruments, a drum, and a “Speaking Trumpet,” allowing players to “find other crews on the same voyage,” which sounds somewhat similar to the Souls series method of connecting with other players. Other loot includes a new set of scars and tatttoos, as well as thematic sails, hull, and a special figurehead relevant to the new adventure. A new set of flags is coming as well, including the Jolly Roger flag, to let rival ships know what they’re in for, and a White Flag for surrendering.
The Hungering Deep will hit the shores of Xbox and PC players this coming Tuesday, May 29th. To prepare for the expansion, a new update also dropped today, which includes a handful of QOL adjustments, such as making chickens less annoying while caged. You can check out the patch notes here.
What do you think of the expansion so far? Is it enough to get you into Sea of Thieves? Let us know in the comments! I wasn’t wildly impressed the first time I played it despite how excited I had been, but I think this expansion looks pretty solid, and Rare is promising more, bigger content updates in the future.
