Quantic Dream Discusses 4K Rendering
Quantic Dream was present at the Game Developers’ Conference (GDC) to showcase their engine for Detroit: Become Human. With all the hype surrounding God of War, it’s easy to forget that another PS4 exclusive is coming out in may. But it’s coming, and here’s information on the visuals you can expect.
With development coming to a close, Quantic Dream Lead Engine Programmer Ronan Marchalot was present on-site at GDC to showcase and discuss the team’s techniques for rendering Detroit: Become Human. There were a number of technological hurdles to cross, but ideas were formulated around helping the game run beautifully on both the base PS4 and PS4 Pro.
Summing up Quantic Dream’s visual accomplishments, Detroit: Become Human will run at 1080p resolution 30 frames per second on the PlayStation 4. On the PS4 Pro, the game will maintain 30 fps but run at 2160p (4K) checkerboard rendering. Both shall witness the benefits of HDR. According to Marchalot, the interface will be rendered at native 4K while the resolution for lighting shall see a boost.
Additionally, Marchalot couldn’t help but expand on how the team managed to make Detroit run as well as it does on the PS4 Pro. The aforementioned ideas the team utilized came in the form of temporal anti-aliasing. This is a technique compatible with checkerboard rendering, which is why it works so well on the PS4 Pro. After post-processing, it smoothens the overall textures, which leads to better lighting, shadows, skin, and more. The full stream of technical info is available to read here. While the method for improving graphics via TAA did have some drawbacks, the developers say it was clearly worth it.
Detroit: Become Human will be available for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro on May 25th. Stay tuned for more updates leading up to release.
