While Fun, the Story Is Strange
It’s chaos, humor, and political commentary that takes itself seriously one moment then turns ridiculous the next. These, essentially, summarize the recent reviews for Ubisoft’s latest installment in a long-running franchise, Far Cry 5.
Currently, Far Cry 5 for the PlayStation 4 is sitting at an 81 on Metacritic, based on 49 reviews scores at the time of this writing. So, it’s worth remembering that number can go up or down by the time it releases tomorrow (9 PM PST). Meanwhile, reviews on the Xbox One show a review score of 89 based on 14 critics. Averaging out the total number, the final score would be 85. But, there’s a reason the scores are kept separate.
As reported by gamesindustry.biz, most outlets appreciate the return to the formula in conjunction with new features in Far Cry 5. Tonally, however, the narrative seems to be all over the place. The story and the open world meander between humor, morbidity, and carnage and, at times, story and open world directly contrast one other. You can learn more in our own review by Paul Sullivan, who argues that fun factor is as prevalent than ever:
“Almost everything works like a dream, and the things that don’t are generally acknowledged with a wink and a nod by the game. The developers know exactly where people are going to think “this again?”, and that’s exactly when you get a GOD DAMN GRIZZLY BEAR.”
Keep it locked for more updates from Ubisoft as time goes by. And feel free to comment your expectations from Far Cry 5.
Happy gaming.
