Japan: Dissidia Final Fantasy Pushes PS4 Sales Over Nintendo Switch

Final Fantasy Will Always Drive Numbers

Media Create is back from its holiday hiatus to bring us the numbers for software and hardware sales in Japan. This time around, the numbers reinforce a well-known fact: Of the two IPs that will always sell in Japan, one of them is Final Fantasy. The other is Persona, but that franchise gets a new game once in a blue moon.

PlayStation Switch

Below, you will Media Create’s recorded software and hardware sales between January 8th and January 14th. Dissidia Final Fantasy pushes PS4 sales just above Nintendo Switch. Let us start with the software chart.

Surprisingly, you’ll note that Sony has overtaken the Nintendo in total console sales. The standard PS4 and PS4 Pro sales combined make for 43,808 over the Switch’s 37,500. This marks the first time in a long time that the hybrid console hasn’t dominated the market. However, Nintendo is pretty much ruler when it comes to software sales. Following Dissidia Final Fantasy, the software chart is littered with Nintendo titles whose totals stack into a hefty sum of revenue.

This week also marks the week PlayStation 4 pushes past 6 million total lifetime sales in Japan. Worldwide, it has exceeded the 74-million milestone. Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch recently became the fastest-selling console in North America with 4.8 million sales since launch. It’s okay to suspect that both consoles will continue to perform well in Japan moving forward. But next week’s Media Create numbers should prove interesting since PS4 and Xbox One will witness the release of Monster Hunter: World.

Dissidia Final Fantasy is currently in open beta, and anyone with a PlayStation 4 can try now for free. The Monster Hunter: World beta will be available on January 19.
