Nintendo Switch Is the Fastest-Selling Console in the US – 4.8 Million Sold

Record Broken in Ten Months Time

Before today, the fastest-selling console in the United States was the Wii. Well, Nintendo went ahead and topped themselves with the Switch. According to the company’s internal sales figures, the Nintendo Switch has sold 4.8 million units since launch ten months ago. Officially, that makes it the US’s fastest-selling console of all time. Of all time!

In the same time frame, the Wii sold a total of 4 million units. But the company revealed more about their numbers: according to Nintendo, 20% of Switch owners own Splatoon 2; 50% have purchased Mario Kart 8 Deluxe; and over 60% own Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It may be safe to say that, of all the numbers we’ve seen thus far, none of them are surprising.

“Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”

Furthermore, over 300 games have been published for the hybrid console. 2018 promises to be an even bigger year, especially if that Nintendo Direct happens this month. With continued third-party support, and more developers jumping on the bandwagon, there will be a greater variety of games reaching the record-breaking console. More was revealed in the press release:

“This year, Nintendo Switch owners can look forward to Nintendo-published games like Kirby Star Allies, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and a new game starring Yoshi. Fans can also expect continued support from major publishers such as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, SEGA, Take 2 and Bethesda, plus a growing catalog of quality content from indie developers.”
