Super Nintendo Getting a New Game 20 Years After Its Debut

Super Nintendo Getting a New Game in Japan

May has already been a good month for retro gamers as last week it was announced that the Nintendo PlayStation prototype now works. Now, even though the Japanese version of the Super Nintendo, Super Famicom, has been discontinued for almost 20 years, there will be a new game coming to the system this summer!

This game, isn’t entirely new as it was originally released for the Super Famicom via Satellaview peripheral in 1997. The game is a side-scrolling fighter called Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero and even though it was released 20 years ago on Satellaview peripheral, it marks the first time players will be able to pick up the physical copy of it. The cartridge of the game will be released in June to celebrate the title’s 20th anniversary for 6,998 yen or $62 USD.

The Stellaview peripheral was an add-on for the Super Famicom that debuted in 1995 and gave players access to digital content like magazines and full games through a subscription service. These games weren’t a permanent fixture for the Stellaview however, as they were broadcast at regular intervals and players only had access to play the titles while they were airing. Some of these games included Radical Dreamers and “BS Zelda” which was a remixed version of the Legend of Zelda. This service was discontinued five years later, in 2000.

In other news, rumors have been circling since last month that Nintendo is planning on releasing a mini SNES, or SNES Classic later this year during the holiday season. Hopefully with the popularity of both the retro systems and the Nintendo Switch, something will be confirmed soon.
