Experience One of the Best Xbox Games at No Cost
Not too long ago, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer brought Xbox fans news of a remaster for one special title. That title was none other than the critically-acclaimed yet widely unknown Phantom Dust. Over a decade after its initial release, here we are.
Debuting on the original Xbox, Phantom Dust was years ahead of its peers in terms of online play. It took a degree of skill and wit to outclass opponents in what was very unique gameplay for the time. Fortunately, players who missed out can experience the game for the first time while fans can now revisit it in HD.
Starting tomorrow, May 16th, anyone with a PC (Windows 10) or Xbox One can download the re-release of Phantom Dust for free. Aaron Greenberg of Microsoft announced the news via twitter today. Aside from an update to visuals, the game will also include changes to single-player progression. As vague as that sounds, we imagine it’s for the better.
Microsoft declared that Phantom Dust would release before this year’s E3, and here we are. And perhaps we should consider ourselves lucky since Microsoft Studios had to make all adjustments without the original source code.
“So everything that we’ve been able to do in this version of Phantom Dust has been through reverse-engineering the binaries, and actually hacking and cracking the code back open again,” said creative director Adam Isgreen in a statement to Polygon.
Since Microsoft has been intent on re-releasing Phantom Dust before E3 2017, it has stirred some speculation toward the announcement of a reboot. Without definitive proof, however, we can only wait until E3 gets underway this June.
Whether you’re a veteran or new to the title, feel free to comment your thoughts on the re-release of Phantom Dust. It’s free, so there’s really never been a better chance to check it out.
Happy gaming.
