Scorpio’s Success Began with Overclocking Xbox One S, Says Phil Spencer

And the Xbox Head’s Reaction to Scorpio’s Spec Reveal

We’ve been teased and asking for an early reveal of Xbox’s next console. By dev accounts, the console has been defeating a lot of expectations. That was all we had to go on until the spec reveal by Digital Foundry. According to Phil Spencer, after all the information was given, he had no idea how the news outlets would respond.

Scorpio 1280 feature

Spencer talked about the reveal in at an interview with Xbox On. He says that the reason he let third-party outlets reveal Scorpio’s specs was so that reactions could be “authentic.” Sure, he and all the other execs and designers could have hyped the information, but they wanted the product to speak on their behalf.

But, even with all the power of the Scorpio, Spencer says it began by overclocking the Xbox One S. Basically, designers tested the limits of the Xbox One to make certain Scorpio would be able to play all the same games. “One of the things that was important to us was, all of your old games are going to run better,” Spencer clarified. It is for this reason he also mentions third-party titles, promising that they will play best on the new console.

While Spencer didn’t name any specific third-party title tested, we know he has a Scorpio at his home. There’s no telling how many games he’s play-tested. That lucky guy.

Scorpio is set to release in all regions during the holidays this year. We don’t expect any more major updates until the final reveal at this year’s E3. Until then and beyond, be sure to stick around for more updates. Happy gaming.
