Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is now out in theaters and has already made $5.1 million in North America! As the reported last movie in the series, this sixth movie is set to be the one that pushes the franchise past the $1 billion mark. Better yet, if that happens this will be the first video game to movie franchise to do so!
The newest Resident Evil movie has already made $35 million in Japan, where it has been in theatres since December of last year according to a report by Deadline. It is expected that the movie will make $70 million or more worldwide this weekend, which is all it will take to move the franchise past $1 billion. Josh Greenstein, Sony Pictures executive, explained that “It’s been five years since the last film, and the global fanbase has been eagerly anticipating its return.” He also confirmed that Screen Gems “has created the highest-grossing video game-based franchise of all time.”
According to Box Office Mojo the previous five Resident Evil movies have made a total of $916.3 million dollars globally. Check out the totals for each of the previous movies below.
