Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Reviews Are In
Earlier this month, we shared with you our list of movies you need to avoid in 2017 and surprise, the latest Resident Evil movie made our list. While Resident Evil movies have never scored well with critics, we were surprised to learn that Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is actually scoring relatively well. Compared to previous Resident Evil movies, the Final Chapter is the best reviewed yet.
Over the past few days, many reviews have surfaced and so far the feedback is positive. Well, positive for a Resident Evil movie. It has a 39 per cent fresh rating (at time of writing) on Rotten Tomatoes and it is averaging a 54 on Metacritic with 11 reviews in. All in all, that isn’t a great score but for this movie it certainly is. We should see some more reviews roll in as the weekend progresses but regardless those are some half decent review scores.
Compared to other movies in the franchise, The Final Chapter is leading the pack. The original Resident Evil movie in 2002 scored a 33 on Metacritic while the more recent Resident Evil: Retribution scored a 39 average. The Last Chapter is the only movie in the franchise that is averaging over 50. Maybe people are excited to finally see the series come to a close? Or maybe this movie isn’t all that bad…
The highest score we’ve seen is from The Film Stage who scored the movie an 83 and said: “Once one is acclimated to this chaos-cinema form, even if it’s a bit more assaultive in post-converted 3D, the writer-director’s simultaneous economic storytelling and boyish imagination come into clear view.”
RogerEbert.com also gave the movie a solid 75 score and said: “Like most films of its type, “The Final Chapter” is utterly ridiculous in every possible way but unlike a lot of them (I am looking at you, “Underworld”), it at least has a healthy sense of its own absurd nature that comes as a blessed relief. And a couple of the action bits are gloriously goofy to behold.”
The worst score we have seen comes from Movie Nation. They gave the movie a 25 and said: “There’s a fascinating satire of America’s unholy alliance of heartless corporations and the religious dupes who worship them just sitting here. But it’ll take a wit far cleverer than action hack Paul W.S. Anderson to work that out.”
