Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Responds to Pachter’s ‘Microsoft Suicide’ Project Scorpio Comments

Just over a week ago we reported on comments made by well-known video game industry analyst, Michale Pachter, in regards to pricing of the upcoming Project Scorpio. Pachter was quoted as saying that Microsoft would be committing suicide should they choose to price the premium console any higher than $399 USD. Turns out Phil Spencer has something to say about that in a recent interview with LevelUp.

Essentially Phil acknowledged Pachter’s comments but also said that Project Scorpio, which we should see in about one year’s time, will certainly be more expensive than the current Xbox One S as it is a premium product. He also stated that Microsoft’s success hardly depends on that one pricing decision or product.

Scorpio will be a premium console. It will cost more than S, obviously, this is how we are building it up. We have not announced the pricing yet, but want to make sure that the investment we are making in the product of Scorpio goes hand in hand with the requirement of high-end consumer and that means a higher price. There is not a single product you see and say ‘this is the product that defines how you are doing in the market’. It really is the repertoire of all products with prices and when we think of Scorpio it is for a high-end consumer who demands the maximum of a console, and the console built to meet that demand.

Current pricing on Xbox One S bundles range from around $250 to $350 USD all depending on the capacity of the HD, the games included and whether or not the console is a limited edition. It’s safe to assume that the Scorpio will certainly be priced higher but until Microsoft lifts the lid off of it, we’ll only be able to speculate. Keep it locked to COGconnected for more information as we have it.
