Titanfall 2 In Trouble?
The Titanfall 2 open beta has been in full swing this weekend. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with it. Forums such as NeoGaf and Reddit are flooded with players expressing disappointment for various reasons.
We here at COGconnected recognize the beta is hardly a finished product but the hate is somewhat alarming considering how impressed we were with the game at E3. Well, the bad news doesn’t stop there for EA’s AAA game as the pre-order sales so far are scary low.
The original Titanfall game released on three platforms (Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC). The total number of pre-orders accumulated 12 weeks from launch was about 255k across all platforms with the Xbox One (see chart below) leading in total pre-orders. Not exactly earth shattering numbers but pretty solid pre-orders for the original game.
Titanfall 2, on the other hand, is being released on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. So naturally you’d think pre-orders would be up; however, this isn’t the case. The pre-order chart 12 weeks from Titfanfall 2’s launch is concerning to say the least as it doesn’t even have 19k pre-orders on a single platform. This means that the game hasn’t even made the chart yet. Yikes! This is a huge contrast to the original on the Xbox One which was at the #4 position 12 weeks from launch.
There is no question the original Titanfall received a ton of hype and marketing. Although it sold well, the active player-base seemed to drop off rather quickly. It wasn’t long before the game became available on EA Access and hit bargain bins in no time flat. Titanfall 2 doesn’t seem to be generating anywhere near the same excitement the first did. EA has said they expect 10 million sales for Titanfall 2 but that number seems overly optimistic at this point.
