The Sims Losing Gender Boundaries, Allowing Transgendered Characters & Customization
In a very inclusive move, it looks as if Electronic Arts and Maxis are removing all gender boundaries in The Sims 4. The game will allow players to create a Sim with any type of voice, walk style, haircut, physique and more as they like, regardless of their chosen gender. Including transgendered characters is a big step forward, but lets hope it doesn’t devolve into a discussion of which bathroom they can use.
A free update that will be available this Thursday opens up The Sims franchise in a manner that has never been done in the history of the franchise. For 16 years the series has restricted certain clothing, hair styles and other aesthetic customizations to male or female characters only. Now, specifically for The Sims 4, over 700 pieces of gender exclusive content that was available in the main game and its expansions, will be made available to every character no matter what. This is significant mostly due to the fact that very few games actually allow for this option.
Maxis said in a statement it wanted to “make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims’ gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more.”
