Skyrim Special Edition: Here’s What You Need to Know

Here’s what you get with Skyrim Special Edition, coming this Fall

As we told you just a few days ago, Skyrim Special Edition is coming to current-gen consoles and PC this fall. But you might be thinking, “who cares, I played Skyrim on my PS3 or 360; I don’t need another remaster.” Well, hold on there muchacho – this is way more than a simple “remaster.” It comes with like a bajillion enhancements and additions that make it worth a second look, even if you’ve played the original.

So what are all these new “enhancements,” you ask? Hey, hold on, we’re getting to it! Sheesh. Ok, here is what you’ll get with Skyrim Special Edition:

  • Remastered art and effects: ok, yes, a remaster of the visuals is definitely part of it. Higher-res, more detailed visuals will refresh the look of the game for your PS4, Xbox One or PC.
  • Volumetric God Rays: these are as awesome as they sound, as beautiful golden rays of sun burst through holes in the clouds. Cue harp music and creepy children’s choir.
  • New snow and water shaders: remember all those amazing mods that gave Skyrim’s water that photo-realistic look? Now that’s what the game will always look like.
  • Built-in mod support for PS4 and Xbox One: it’s been a huge hit with Fallout 4, so Bethesda is giving Skyrim the same access to mods on consoles (let’s hope these ones are made available). As we saw in the announcement trailer, the interface will even be the same.
  • It will include all DLC. Can you say Dragonborn?
  • If you’re a Steam user and you already own Skyrim and all of its DLC, you’ll get a free upgrade to the Special Edition. That’s pretty sweet.
  • Also for PC, saves will be transferable, and it will be 64 bit.

So to sum up, Skyrim Special Edition is WAY more than just a remaster – it gives you mod support, new effects, and all the DLC in addition to shiny new visuals. So you might want to give this one a gander, even if you completed the original. And from what Bethesda has told us – that an Elder Scrolls VI is “years” away – you’re going to need something to occupy you.
