GameStop exec says we’ll get announcements on rumoured new consoles at E3 2016
We can expect new consoles to be announced at E3 2016 – if game retailer GameStop is to be believed. Speaking during GameStop’s latest earnings briefing, company COO Tony Bartel said they are expecting to see some major hardware-related announcements in LA.
Bartel wouldn’t specify who would make these announcements, but as news outlets everywhere – including we at COGconnected – have been reporting for some time, there is lots of evidence that both Sony and Microsoft are hard at work on new machines.
Barrel says that GameStop is looking to E3 2016 to be the venue where those projects finally get a reveal – as well as big reveals in the red-hot VR space. “We expect E3 to focus on key titles in the back half of the year and console announcements,” he said. “We also expect VR to generate significant gaming consumer and press interest.”
Barrel also commented on a variety of recent industry developments. In the area of VR, he said that he expects that GameStop will be a major player in headset sales. While avoiding making any predictions about how the rumoured new Nintendo NX, Xbox One and PlayStation consoles will sell, he did show a slide that gave some idea of the Nintendo NX’s potential for sales based on the Wii U and Wiii. In case you missed it, Microsoft is reported to be working on a “slim” version that will apparently be out this summer. And for their part, Sony has a more powerful “PS4K” in the works. Nothing official has been announced for either yet – but here’s hoping that GameStop’s prediction for E3 2016 is right! No matter what, stay tuned here for news as we hear it.
