The Flash – ‘Legends of Today’ Recap

After months and months and months of planning, the big mid-season crossover with Arrow has arrived. This year is particularly big one because it’s also the jump off point for Legends of Tomorrow! This, of course, will also continue into tomorrow’s Arrow episode, so make sure you check back and see how the big event will wrap up! But let’s get it started with The Flash.

SPOILERS AHEAD

We open on Barry pushing himself as hard as he can in order to break new speeds to compete with Zoom. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to make any headway, much to Wells and his own frustration. Barry leaves Caitlyn and Wells to figure out what can be done while he goes to meet Patty. We cut to a ship docking in the harbour where a captain and his sailors lead a stowaway out from their brig. The prisoner came prepared with dozen of knives that the captain and security marvel at when the prisoner expresses his joy in being able to complete his hunt. Some nifty moves, a little magic and some serious knife work and our prison runs free. I’ll just go ahead and cut to the chase here – it’s Vandal Savage and he’s come for Hawkgirl and now I’m very excited.

Joe, Patty and Barry examine the crime scene photographs both appalled and a little impressed. Barry uncovered a sliver of the knife in one of the victims which he plans on running for clues. We then find Kendra and Cisco on an after-hours date at the coffee shop where she springs a romantic dinner on him. Their inexplicable romance continues to bloom despite the fact that they’ve had roughly 90 seconds of screen time with each other and Cisco is, let’s face it, kind of annoying. Anyway, Savage shows up and is convinced that Kendra is the reincarnation of Priestess Shiera, someone from another life and he plans on making her a sacrifice. This is met with confusion, that is until Cisco activates a distress signal and calls in the cavalry. Barry shows up in the nick of time and saves Cisco from Savages’ knives to which Cisco blurts out Barry’s name… cause again, there can’t be anyone in town who doesn’t know The Flash’s secret identity.

This leads to yet another introduction scene at STAR Labs with Kendra and the team. Man, Patty is going to be pissed she was literally the last person to find out about Barry. So, Barry matches the knives together and now they know they’re hunting the same murderer who uses blades that are centuries old and refers to Kendra by Egyptian names. Barry wants to protect Kendra from this new threat so he decides he’s going to need to enlist the help of a few friends in Star City. Barry’s reasoning for never needing the Arrow’s help before is something seems off about Savage and only Team Arrow has had experience with magic before.

Which brings us to Star City where Damien Darhk is draining the life from some anonymous henchmen. His plans to steal a chemical bomb are held up by the arrival of Green Arrow and his multi colored squad. After thrashing the Ghosts, Darhk grabs Oliver and begins to suck the life force from him, but luckily, Barry is there to pull him out. And now the crossover is full steam ahead!

So now Kendra knows the secret identity of everyone as they all meet up in the Arrow Cave (still prefer The Quiver). Felicity manages to track down a picture of their new foe, but it’s oddly dated in the 70’s which brings tension to a head as Kendra is short on answers for Oliver. Back in STAR Labs, Wells is working on a formula to help Barry increase his speed which Caitlyn is uniquely qualified to help him with.

Back at Oliver’s apartment, the gang continues to get caught up on what’s happened since the last crossover – I mean, since they last saw each other. Cisco fills Barry in on his ‘vibe’ (I genuinely feel like Bart having to call it ‘the shinning’ when I say that) he got with Kendra which leads them to speculate on what it means. Which is the perfect time for Savage to show up and start throwing knives again. Some slick timing puts one in Barry’s back and he saves everyone else. It takes the team up of Oliver and Barry to put Savage off balance enough for Thea to put an arrow in his throat which puts him over the balcony. But lo and behold, Savage is nowhere to be found when they investigate.

So, now the team is seriously concerned. Concerned enough that Cisco decides to vibe Kendra to see what he can find. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves as Malcolm shows up with some assassin’s in tow and gets the drop on our heroes. Back in STAR Labs, Caitlyn and Wells put together the formula to give Barry a speed boost and Jay Garrick makes his return for them to test the drug on. Jay is less than pleased with this idea, despite being without his speed, and he goes off on Wells. Not even Caitlyn can calm him down and he storms off with a dire warning about giving the formula to Barry.

Merlyn fills the squad in on who their foe is (yes, I gave it away up front) and what they should expect from this immortal monster. Kendra leaves to process all this as Malcolm tells her that her fate is sealed. This seems like the obvious time for Hawkman to show up and grab Kendra. Meanwhile, Patty is playing catch up on the case when she spots the supposedly dead Harrison Wells.

Caitlyn stops Patty from calling 911 and gets Joe to the scene ASAP. Back in Star City, the team has Hawkman chained up in the Cave (no masks on, of course) where they demand some answers. He fills her in their real reincarnated identities and why Savage is ruthlessly hunting her, which you’re just going to have to Google cause I don’t have the space to explain it all here. Malcolm reappears to tell them that Savage is hunting the Staff of Horus in order to defeat the ever growing number of heroes he’s facing, which could spell doom for all involved.

So, back in STAR Labs, Wells isn’t doing so hot with the bullet in his chest. Caitlyn needs the help of the one man who might not come – Jay. In Star City, Kendra has agreed to let Carter (Hawkman) show her how to reconnect with her past self. It doesn’t seem to work how it usually does which forces Barry to come to terms with what’s happening in a ‘funny when you put it that way’ speech. Oliver has an epiphany that the Staff of Horus is in Central City, hence Kendra and Savage being drawn there. Which puts our two heroes on a collision course with an immortal supervillain!

Caitlyn is desperately trying to keep Wells alive and just as things take a turn for the worst, Jay shows up to help. So, of course Jay has to risk his life to save Wells by injecting himself with the experimental serum in order to get his speed back. Jay gets his speed back and manages to grab the bullet, stabilizing Wells.

Meanwhile, Kendra is 100% sold on the fact that she’s a reincarnated priestess from Ancient Egypt and decides to force her emergence. Barry and Oliver arrive to find out they are too late and Savage already has the staff. The duo clash with Savage, but the power the staff wields is far too much for our two heroes. Kendra leaps embraces her fate and leaps, her wings and past lives unfolding to save her which gets Savage’s attention and he decides to blow the heroes up but Barry manages to get them to safety.

Wells wakes up and thanks Jay for helping him and Jay asks Wells to keep the serum, Velocity 6, away from Barry. The entire team bands together and meets in Central City to team up and take down Savage, once and for all.

But we’re not done yet. Oliver sees his ex-girlfriend from way back when with a son that is just about the right age to be his!

P.S. An awful lot sure happened this week!
