The Walking Dead Mid-Season Finale: Thoughts And Reactions

If you haven’t seen the mid-season finale, you have been warned.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Last night was the mid-season finale for The Walking Dead, which means we have to occupy ourselves till February 2016 to get another dose of the undead apocalypse. While I enjoyed the first half of season six as a whole, I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed by “Start to Finish”; actually I was furious about how certain characters reacted.

Kids Say The Darndest Things

I’ve always said children and the apocalypse don’t mix. Kids are very important to advance the ever declining population of the human race but they always seem to find a way to screw everything up. Let’s start with the beef between Carl and Rob. We all know Rob has it in for Carl over a weird love triangle with Enid, but he chose the absolute worst time in human history to be a rebellious teen. I found it odd that given their extreme circumstance, being trapped in a house surrounded by walkers, Ron would choose that moment to pull a gun on Carl. Their little squabble compromised the entire group and quite possibly led to the death of some key characters. Why couldn’t he wait till they were out of immediate danger to settle their differences?

After Carl and Ron’s little dance, they attracted some unwanted attention. Lucky for them Rick pulled an old trick out of his hat from season one – covering up in zombie guts to disguise their scent. All went well until Jessie’s clueless, sheltered son Sam decided to pipe up at the wrong time calling for his mom in a crowd full of walkers. What the hell was he thinking!? I get he is inexperienced when it comes to the whole apocalypse thing, but even a child that young should understand the immediate danger that is in front of them.

Clash Of The Titans

Now let’s address the massive elephant in the room: the epic fight between Carol and Morgan. In normal circumstances, I would love to see two great characters battle it out in a “who would win” scenario, but once again the timing just doesn’t make sense from a logical standpoint. They both could have kept watch over the wolf until the zombies were cleared then brought it to Rick to decide his fate. One of the captured wolves was secured and posed no threat – what made Carol have to put an end to it at that very moment? The bigger threat is looming outside, but the clashing of ideologies between Morgan and Carol hit boiling point and ended up with both of them on the floor, allowing the injured wolf to make his escape with our beloved (wannabe) doctor.

Morgan is turning out to be a grade A douche-bag. When Morgan made his triumphant return at the end of season five, I was stoked to see an old favorite return with some new kick-ass moves under his belt. Since then, he has repeatedly disappointed me by putting people in danger with his outdated beliefs. Morgan can’t bring it to himself to kill people who have done terrible things and I believe this will lead to his eventual death. It makes me mad that his character would fight Carol in order to save someone who was honest about his intentions to kill everyone. Take the side of your fellow teammate and try saving someone who won’t pose serious harm to your community. I don’t see where this plan could have gone right but stubborn old Morgan had to play his “we can all change” card at the worst time.

Prediction For Mid-Season Return

I know it’s probably hard to believe, but it’s going to get from bad to worse next half. After the finale, we got introduced to a teaser of a group called The Saviours pulling over Sasha, Abraham and Daryl. Fans of the comic know where the show is heading and we will be seeing one of the most ruthless anti-heroes, Negan.

Next episode will probably have Glenn and Enid drawing the walkers away from Maggie on that guard post. I don’t believe the producers will kill off Ron, Carl, Gabriel or Rick but there’s a good chance we can see Sam or Rick’s new love interest get turned into a walking meal. I still think Daryl and his crew will swoop in and draw the undead away from Alexandria and then that will lead into the introduction of Negan and all the madness that ensues. Finally, I think Morgan and Carol will be forced to settle their differences in order to rescue Denise from the escaped Wolf.

Some side notes about the episode:

  • Rick leaving baby Judith in a room alone with Deanna slowly dying wasn’t the best parenting move.
  • What ever happened to Heath (Straight Outta Compton’s Dr.Dre)? His character showed up early in the season and helped Glenn but then kind of just vanished.
  • Gabriel is going to start getting on Rick’s good side and hopefully we will see some redemption in his character.
  • Eugine can pick a lock! So he’s not completely useless after all…okay he’s still pretty useless.
  • Deanna went out like a boss but she should have saved a bullet for herself.

Thoughts on the episode? Were you satisfied at the overall outcome of the season so far? Let us know how you feel!
