Fans Need a Metroid for Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Knows it
After the Nintendo Switch Presentation, some people wondered where Metroid was. While it would have been nice to see another banner besides Zelda, Nintendo never really teased anything beyond Link. But obviously fans are hungry for more of the names we know. This is especially the case after Nintendo issued over 500 decease and desist orders last year against fan-made titles. We almost had a playable Metroid 2, almost…That’s not to say secret projects aren’t in the works. At least, that’s what we gather from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.
At the Nintendo Switch hands-on event in New York, Reggie was asked about the next Metroid by GameSpot. Aside from pointing out that it’s one of the most asked questions, that and Mother 3(Earthbound), he had this to say: “we are aware that there are some key IP that consumers just can’t wait for the next true installment in that franchise’s legacy. Suffice it to say, we’re aware of it, and talk to me in a year and let’s look back and see what’s happened.” We have to go ahead and guess that  Nintendo has been “aware” for some time. But he said by next year; is that a hint at E3? Perhaps Nintendo didn’t want to run out of ammo before the next big event. That makes sense, right? A new Metroid announcement could probably steal the show at any convention.
And speaking of Metroid, numerous outlets report that Retro Studios has a Nintendo Switch game in the works, and has been in development for three years. Of course you remember Retro for making the Metroid trilogy. However, some insider sources, like Liam Robertson aka ‘Tamaki,’ say the IP is original. In other words, it couldn’t be a Metroid. Yet Nintendo knows the fans are raving, and felt inclined to skip a generation with Wii U, so where’s Metroid? We can only hope Nintendo is just pulling a J.J. Abrams on us and trying to keep the project super quiet.
Best case scenario: Platinum Games is working on it as we speak. The last Metroid game we got was Metroid Prime: Federation Force, also one of the most disliked YouTube videos in history. Therefore, at this point in time, it’s hard to surmise why Nintendo wouldn’t bring back one of its flag-ship IPs, now that Switch is here. But what are your thoughts?
