Ape Out Video Review
Have you ever been sitting at home, sipping on fine wine and eating a cheese plate and mused to yourself: I wish there was a version of Miami Hotline…but with gorillas. I certainly have, and I know I can’t be the only one. Developed by Gabe Cuzzillo and published by Devolver Digital, Ape Out is a top-down beat ’em up that revolves around you, a gorilla, tearing apart a stylistically cool-as-a-cucumber city on your gorilla rampages. Sure, this sounds like a formula for success, considering that gorillas have been around practically since the beginning of gaming, but is the game itself fun to play? With so many indie games constantly flooding the market (and my fragile brain’s consciousness), is it worth taking time out of your day to give a go? Check out our review below to find out!
Turns out: yes. Ape Out is totally worth it, with a fun, almost bullet-hell-like experience of maneuvering enemies and levels, and the stylistic homage to its source materials work in its favor rather than against it. Not only are the visuals stylistic, but the blood and gore are too, making you feel like a homicidal Jackson Pollock when you make quick work of your enemies. It elevates ultra-violence to an art form with its imagery and mechanics- don’t let Fox News get hold of that quote, though.
