Zombie Army 4: Dead War Review
Yes, another zombie game is here, and I can hear the collective groans from you all. Don’t walk away though, as this one plays like a “B” movie that is not only self aware, but a great game too! Did I capture your attention yet? Because Zombie Army 4: Dead War definitely captured mine.
Bloody Good Times
If you haven’t played any of the previous Zombie Army games, do not fear. I hadn’t played any of them either and found that this game was extremely easy to pick up and play. All you need to know is that Hitler managed to raise the dead in the final days of World War II. After you have sent Hitler to Hell, you and your team need to fight of the rest of the undead Nazi hordes left. Yes, you read that correctly.
Zombie Army 4: Dead War completely capitalizes on the extreme nature of the world it has created. Rebellion is constantly throwing new areas, items and zombies at you to keep things interesting. And even when I had hordes of zombies around me with flying body parts and gunshots everywhere, the frame rate did not drop.
There are four different characters to choose from who each have their own specialties. Karl (sniper), Boris (melee), Jun (healer), and Shola (explosives expert) are the characters you can choose from. The gameplay is your typical 3rd person shooter, where you fire guns (one primary, one secondary, and a pistol), throw grenades, melee and even stomp on zombies to crush their skulls. Med-kits are also available to aid you when things get crazy. Kills are so satisfyingly epic you can feel the intensity as body parts and blood fly all over the place, and don’t get me started on getting that coveted head-shot kill.
The entire campaign can also be played with a friend via online co-op mode with up to 3 other players. Playing cooperatively manages to increase the fun of this game as you coordinate and discuss tactics with your co-op partner, all while the undead are coming at you, in real time.
Countless Hours of Gore and Glory
Rebellion really made an effort to create a wide range of zombies. They are not only different visually, but in how they act too. There are the typical slow-walker style, runners, gunners, and even zombie animals (I won’t tell you what type though). There’s a nice mission variety, forcing the player to assess the area. Running into every single area and shooting won’t always be effective. Don’t get me wrong, there are areas where you can do that, but Zombie Army 4 creates situations that force you to be stealthy just as much as skillful in combat.
There is a ton of content in Dead War – with over 30 missions to complete, Zombie Army 4 easily has a 10+ hour campaign. That being said, there’s still more to do after that by replaying missions on a higher difficulty, upgrading your character, and hunting for miscellaneous items. And then there is a horde mode that offers four different maps to play on with the goal of fighting off and killing waves upon waves of zombies.
Both the storyline and gameplay in the Zombie Army series have that classic “B movie” vibe to them, and with a storyline as insane as this one, it just feels right as the game is self aware and gives the audience what they would want, including tons of gore, humour, and satisfying kills. Rebellion really took things to the next level, not only with tons of variety of undead, but missions and areas to explore. There is so much game here with replayability and I hope it will be expanded with some DLC or online challenges. Even if this is your first time experiencing the Zombie Army franchise, or a game like this, this is a great title to start with. Rebellion really has perfected the zombie shooter. So grab a drink and lets go!
