If you have been following COGconnected over the years you know we’ve become big fans of Turtle Beach’s Stealth headsets. Over the years, these affordable cans have consistently scored extremely well. Excellent value, superb sound, and comfort all seem to be common themes. That is the theme once again as we take a look at another Turtle Beach Stealth headset that is predictably good.

Turtle Beach’s Stealth 700 Gen 2 MAX headset is a step in the right direction when it comes to the evolution of its best-selling Stealth 700 series. At its core, it’s an Xbox One headset; however, the Gen 2 MAX can connect to other gaming systems such as the PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile. It’s easily the most versatile Stealth 700 headset we have seen yet. So if you’ve got multiple consoles, the Stealth Gen 2 MAX has you covered.

Add to that the 40+ hour battery life and the reasonable price point, and the Stealth 700 Gen 2 MAX feels like a significant upgrade over its 2020 Gen 2 model.

The design of the headphones is nothing incredibly fancy or innovative. In fact, they look identical to the 2020 Gen 2 model. The model I reviewed was all-black equipped with cooling gel-infused memory foam ear cushions. They feature Turtle Beach’s trademark logo on the earcups, a flip to mute mic, standard game and chat volume controls on the left ear cup. While the standard black design is nothing too special, let’s face it, you aren’t buying the headset for looks. It’s all about that sweet sound, which is where the Gen 2 MAX excels.

Comfort-wise; however, the headset fits a bit snug on my head. It’s much more tight-fitting than my Astro A50s. While the headband is adjustable, I just found the headset a little tighter than I typically prefer. Thankfully the ear cushions are cooled, which helps some. In terms of weight, the headset is super light. And just like other Stealth headsets, it is glasses friendly.

Connecting the headset out of the box is a breeze. Simply plug in the included wireless USB transmitter into the Xbox and turn on the headset. That is it. Connectivity was instant as it recognized my headset right away. Not to mention the connection was strong. I did not experience any lag or sound popping issues at all.

Comfort and looks don’t mean squat if the sound stinks. So how do these bad boys sound? The Stealth 700 Gen 2 MAX is fantastic. The 50mm Nanoclear neodymium drivers deliver amazing sound with clear highs and rich lows. The bass and overall clarity are outstanding. All the sounds come through crystal clear with no lag or latency issues. The deep bass is noticeable and adjustable via the Turtle Beach Audio Hub app, yet I found myself simply using the various default EQ modes.

Superhuman Hearing Mode is once again back and remains my favorite of all the modes. For shooters, it doesn’t get any better than this. Being able to clearly hear footsteps, and hearing where bullets are coming from feels like I’m getting an advantage on the battlefield. I mean, I am still getting my ass handed to me but at least with Superhuman Hearing, I can clearly hear everything around me.

The attached mic comes through crystal clear and my friends had no complaints when it came to how my voice sounded coming through the mic. I love the way you can mute yourself by simply flipping the mic up. It’s not a large mic either, so it never gets in the way and doesn’t sit too close to my mouth either.

I should mention that on the downside, the headset doesn’t come with any case or stand. A storage case or stand would have been nice but in order to keep the price point down, I understand some of the extras had to be sacrificed.

It’s hard not to recommend the wireless Stealth 700 Gen 2 MAX. The fantastic sound, versatility, and incredible battery life make this headset stand out compared to others in its price range. Connectivity is super strong, even in Bluetooth mode, and the mic works as advertised. While there are superior headsets on the market, when it comes to overall value, the Stealth 700 Gen 2 MAX shines and stands as a rock-solid purchase for console gamers.
