Persona 3 Reload Nintendo Switch 2 Review
Jumping into a long-running franchise can feel intimidating, especially when the numbers on the box suggest years of history to catch up on. The Persona series may only have five mainline entries, but its many spin-offs, not to mention its origins as a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei, can make it hard to know where to start. While the first two games were directly connected, every entry from Persona 3 onward has been a standalone adventure, each often hailed as a benchmark for modern JRPGs. First released in February 2024, this acclaimed remake now arrives on the Nintendo Switch 2. Is this the perfect home for one of the most celebrated JRPGs of all time, or does the transition to the Switch 2 come with compromises?
You play as Makoto, a new student at Gekkoukan High School with a somewhat mysterious past. Through the day, you live life as a normal student, studying an array of subjects and navigating issues that plague teenage life, but at night, everything drastically changes. Once the clock strikes midnight, the Dark Hour arrives. At this point, which lives between one day and the next, Shadows roam, feeding on the minds of humans. As only a select few can enter this realm, you are quickly recruited by the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad in order to save humanity from Eternal Darkness. Although there is a clear overarching story, it’s the smaller, relationship-building tales that make Persona 3 Reload thrive.
Making Friends
Social Links offer chances to bond with specific characters, unfolding stories that form the heart of the narrative. What begins as a simple side activity can evolve into a layered, complex arc where morally ambiguous moments challenge how you respond. Some threads explore dark, emotional territory, while others remain lighthearted. However, the game carefully paces each one to foster a connection with the character and let the narrative grow naturally.
Due to time restrictions, you can only participate in a certain number of activities per day. This leads to situations where you must consider a variety of options: continue building your bond with a character or progress down a new path to connect with someone else. Not only is this a great narrative tool, but it also helps to make the world feel alive. Navigating the dense environment rewards you with a variety of encounters that make exploration feel meaningful. This creates an evocative gameplay loop that draws you deeper into the world’s lore.

The new voice actors deliver strong performances that bring each character to life. While longtime fans may bristle at the change, the cast fits seamlessly into their roles, capturing the full range of emotions the story demands. Their work ensures the characters feel vibrant and memorable, leaping off the screen with authenticity, resulting in emotional beats that stay with you long after playing.
Time For Some Action
During the Dark Hour, you enter Tartarus, a massive multi-floored dungeon filled with terrifying creatures to defeat. While the structure can feel a little repetitive, the combat is expertly designed, offering plenty of strategic options. Enemies are weak to specific elements, encouraging experimentation to quickly discover the most effective way to bring them down. Exploiting these weaknesses stuns foes, allowing you to follow up with another attack, or pass the turn to an ally, who can unleash their Persona for additional damage. This creates a satisfying tactical layer, as carefully choosing the right options can let you wipe out an entire group in a single sweep.

Adding even more depth is the Theurgy system, which unleashes powerful abilities that can dramatically shift the tide of battle. These moves build up through specific actions, rewarding smart play and strategy. Together, these mechanics form a combat system that is both rich and rewarding and is truly brilliant in its execution. As you ascend the tower, you’ll find Monad doors, which reward you for tackling challenging creatures. Other doors also lead to costumes and levelling opportunities, each giving the incentive to explore. Areas also house treasure chests and boxes that require you to use Twilight Fragments to open. You can find these during the daytime, which helps connect the two segments of the game.
Signature Style
The style and presentation of the Persona series remain unmatched, and this remake brings Reload, the third entry, in line with its modern counterparts. Character models have been fully updated, adding nuance and personality to the cast. Performance on the Switch 2 is strong, running at a locked 30 frames per second. While the PS5 and Series X versions reach 60, the game’s methodical pacing means this difference is rarely an issue. The soundtrack, an inspired blend of hip-hop, jazz, and electronic influences, perfectly complements the game’s stylish aesthetic. Together, the visuals and music create an experience that stands head and shoulders above many of its peers.
Persona 3 Reload is an authentic modernization of a landmark JRPG. For newcomers, it offers an unforgettable adventure with fantastic combat and a rich, intrigue-filled narrative. Returning players will find the classic revitalized on Nintendo’s hybrid, with locked, steady performance that makes it a perfect title to experience on the go. Altogether, it’s a faithful revival that ensures Persona 3 continues to resonate with both old fans and a new generation of players.
