NITRO GEN OMEGA Review
NITRO GEN OMEGA is a tactical RPG that doesn’t just ask you to fight; it asks you to survive a world that has already lost. Developed by DESTINYbit, the game presents a bleak future where humanity has retreated to cities built atop massive pillars, leaving the wastelands to rogue machines that scavenge parts to create grotesque amalgamations. You play as the “Fools”, mercenaries piloting mechs to provide these desperate cities with necessary supplies.
While the premise is evocative, the game’s deep systems and unique t combat can feel overwhelming at the start. However, once the gears of its complex management and tactical phases begin to mesh, it offers a rewarding, if grueling, experience, which can also start feeling repetitive after a while.
Tactical Tug-of-War
The heart of the game lies in its combat, which is split into a Planning Phase and a Resolution Phase. Unlike traditional grid-based RPGs, the battlefield here is divided into four Zones. Distance is secondary to which zone a mech occupies; for instance, melee attacks only land if you are in the same zone as your target.

The “Timeline” is where the real strategy happens. You assign orders to your pilots, which then resolve based on their position and Priority. It feels like a high-stakes chess match where you must predict enemy intentions and use abilities like Scan to reveal their segments of the timeline.
It’s a system that really needs your patience. Demands it even. Managing resources like Heat, Ammo, and Magazines adds layers of friction. If your heat maxes out, your orders fail, often leading to a catastrophic chain reaction where your mech’s hull points drop and your pilots become Wounded or even Gravely Wounded.
Herding Fools
The game shines in its management layer, though it can contribute to early-game confusion. You operate from an Airship, exploring the wastelands while managing Supplies like fuel, food, and water and paying your pilots’ Wages. Neglecting these leads to a drop in Mood, which can cause pilots to suffer Breakdowns in combat or even desert the crew entirely. Though you’ll have to figure this out yourself a lot sometimes. The game felt a little slow to provide guidance. Instructions are a little bit hard to follow and at times, too much at once. Or too little. The balance is missing here.

To keep your crew functional, you must spend Activity Tokens earned from contracts. These tokens allow pilots to perform activities that reduce Fatigue, improve mood, and form Bonds. This creates a loop where your performance in the wasteland directly dictates your pilots’ mental health and combat effectiveness. More stuff to manage and keep an eye on.
A Fool’s World
The world map is navigated via Sonar, which detects wreckage and hidden machines. To find content, players look for specific markers. Each marker is for something different like the red question mark. These are main quests. Yellow is be mechs and activities. Yellow exclamation marks however, are contracts.
One of the most satisfying elements is unlocking new mechs. While you start with the well-rounded Monki, completing specific questlines in cities like San Miguel or Resonant Prime unlocks the Ocelot. A focused on a Stability mechanic. As well as Patriot which utilizes Combo hits to increase damage.
NITRO GEN OMEGA is a dense experience. The Day One patch helps bridge the gap for new players by adding tooltips for Iron Man Mode, locked activities, and quest notifications. However, the learning curve isn’t steep, it remains tedious to an extent. Though this night simply require a different player than I am. The plot (driven by various factions like the profit-driven Traders’ Gyld or the power-hungry Resonant Accord) can feel backgrounded by the immediate stress of survival.

For those who feel lost, like I did a couple of times, the key is to follow the Red Question Marks. They advance the plot and use the Management Screen to abandon contracts that are too difficult. If a battle goes south, don’t be afraid to Retreat. It costs your rewards, but it saves your pilots’ lives.
NITRO GEN OMEGA is a game about you and your Code Lyoko style crew toughing it out at the end of the world. If you enjoy turn-based anime robot action, you might find that fighting for that end is more engaging than it first appears.
