Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Marvel dominated the arcade scene with countless iconic side-scrolling beat ’em ups that became genre classics. Its mix of incredible characters and signature powers gave fans the perfect way to live out their superhero fantasies. After years away from the genre, Tribute Games and Dotemu bring the heroes home in a new adventure that strives to recapture that old-school magic. Will Marvel Cosmic Invasion manage to honor Marvel’s beloved beat ’em up history, or struggle to live up to the legends?
Based on the massive crossover event Annihilation, the game has you defending Earth against an unprecedented cosmic attack. Heroes from across the universe join forces as you battle from the streets of New York City to the depths of the Negative Zone. The story isn’t groundbreaking, but it provides a solid framework for big, memorable encounters. The star-studded cast fuels a game packed with exciting moments and plenty of fan service that longtime Marvel followers will appreciate.
Back to the Beginning
Side-scrolling beat ’em ups are in the midst of a resurgence. Streets of Rage 4 and Shredder’s Revenge proved there’s still plenty of life in the genre, building on classic foundations to deliver modern, polished brawlers. Tribute Games now shifts its focus from heroes in a half-shell to heroes in capes, and that’s where the game truly shines. While the Turtles shared similar playstyles, each Marvel character here feels completely distinct. Some soar across the screen, and others stomp forward with raw power. Along with differences in size and movement speed, every hero brings unique abilities that further define their personality.

Spider-Man, for example, doesn’t just swing through environments; he can slow enemies with his webs. Iron Man unleashes a massive Unibeam, and Rocket Raccoon fires off rapid barrages from his overflowing arsenal. Every hero has a signature move that reflects who they are, and their movesets flow together beautifully. Close-quarters combat is where the game excels, letting you chain attacks into stylish combos that perfectly capture each character’s essence. While offence is at the forefront, Marvel Cosmic Invasion also focuses on defence. Some characters can dodge through strikes, while others can block and counter, adding much-needed layers to the combat.
Tag Me In!
The individuality is further amplified by the secondary character and swap mechanic. You can freely switch between your two heroes or summon your partner for an assist attack, combining their moves with your own. This leads to wonderful moments where you juggle enemies in tandem, pushing the combo counter higher and higher. As the numbers climb and the screen erupts in chaos, the endorphin rush is undeniable. It’s at these points, where you’re overwhelmed, that the special attack can be your saving grace. With the click of a button, you can unleash a powerful area-of-effect attack that wipes out multiple foes at once. To prevent spamming, you can only activate the maneuver once your meter is full.
Each mission includes several challenges that require you to tackle the objective with certain characters. This adds to the replayability as you can revisit levels to complete tasks and earn rewards. Completion of these unlocks varies items in the vault: character profiles give you back story on the heroes and color palettes allow you to alter their appearance. In addition, you can also unlock music and, most importantly, arcade modifiers!

The arcade mode cranks up the challenge, requiring you to venture through each level without the ability to restart an area. However, modifiers, which you can unlock in the campaign, add further variety, allowing you to tweak a range of elements. The options on offer are fantastic, giving you the ability to alter the game so that veterans can challenge themselves and newcomers can engage. This leads to a truly accessible experience that is perfect for players of any age and experience.
Pixel Perfect
The overall presentation is fantastic. The chunky pixel art captures the nuances of each character’s design while still maintaining a strong sense of nostalgia. This attention to detail carries through to the animation, as every hero moves and behaves like their comic book counterpart. Their attacks also reflect their personalities, thanks to smart visual design that clearly communicates each move’s purpose and flair. Backed by punchy sound effects and delicious backing tracks, the game doesn’t just evoke the era; it builds on it, delivering a remarkable evolution of the classic formula.
Marvel Cosmic Invasion is one of the best beat ’em ups to date. The inclusion of a secondary character elevates the combat, letting you juggle enemies and rack up massive combos with ease. Each hero feels distinctive, with bespoke movement and attacks that make experimenting with different team combinations a thrill. While the campaign is short, it encourages replaying levels to complete challenges and unlock extra content. Paired with its stunning presentation, the game stands as one of the genre’s finest modern examples.
